Degree Homologation (Homologación de Títulos)

If you have a foreign university degree and want to practice a regulated profession in Spain — or need your academic qualifications formally recognized — you must go through the homologación process with Spain’s Ministry of Education.

Without homologación, you may have a valid work permit but be legally unable to practice your profession. This catches many immigrants off guard.

Homologación vs. Equivalencia

Spain has two different processes for foreign degree recognition, and which one you need depends on your profession:

Homologación (Full Recognition)

  • Required for regulated professions — professions where Spanish law requires a specific degree to practice
  • Results in your degree being considered identical to the equivalent Spanish degree
  • Allows you to register with the relevant Colegio Profesional (professional association) and practice your profession

Regulated professions requiring homologación include:

SectorProfessions
HealthcareMedicine, Nursing, Dentistry, Pharmacy, Physiotherapy, Psychology, Veterinary Medicine
LegalLaw (Abogacía), Procurador
EngineeringCivil Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Architecture, Telecommunications
EducationPrimary/Secondary Teaching (requires Master’s CAP/MAES after homologación)
ScienceGeology (for certain official certifications)

Equivalencia (Academic Level Equivalence)

  • For non-regulated professions — confirms your degree is equivalent to a Spanish academic level (Grado, Máster, Doctor)
  • Does not grant the right to practice a specific profession
  • Useful for: employment applications, further study in Spain, civil service exams (oposiciones)
  • Faster processing than full homologación

Note

Not sure which you need? If you can practice your profession without a specific license or professional association membership, you likely only need equivalencia. If your job requires joining a Colegio Profesional, you need full homologación.

The Homologación Process

Step 1: Prepare Your Documents

You will need:

  • Original degree certificate (título universitario)
  • Complete academic transcript with subjects, hours/credits, and grades
  • Passport or NIE
  • Proof of payment of the application fee (~€160)

All documents must be apostilled and sworn-translated into Spanish.

Important

Academic transcripts matter. The Ministry compares your curriculum subject-by-subject against the Spanish equivalent degree. Missing core subjects can result in a requirement to pass additional exams (pruebas de aptitud) or complete bridging courses.

Step 2: Submit Your Application

Online: Through the Ministry of Education’s Sede Electrónica — requires a digital certificate (Cl@ve or FNMT).

In person: At any registro (government registry office) or by mail to:

Subdirección General de Títulos y Reconocimiento de Cualificaciones Ministerio de Educación, Formación Profesional y Deportes Paseo del Prado, 28 — 28014 Madrid

Upon submission you receive a resguardo (receipt). This is important — it proves your application is in progress and may be accepted by some employers as proof of pending recognition.

Step 3: Wait for Resolution

PathwayTypical TimelineNotes
Equivalencia3-6 monthsSimpler comparison of academic level
Homologación (clean match)6-12 monthsWhen your curriculum closely matches the Spanish degree
Homologación (with conditions)12-18 monthsMay require passing complementary exams or completing additional coursework

Important

Administrative silence applies. If you receive no response within 6 months for equivalencia or 12 months for homologación, the application is considered denied by administrative silence (silencio negativo). You can then appeal (recurso de alzada).

Step 4: Receive Your Credencial

Once approved, you receive a credencial de homologación — the official document confirming your degree is recognized in Spain.

For regulated professions, you must then:

  1. Register with your Colegio Profesional (e.g., Colegio de Médicos for doctors, Colegio de Abogados for lawyers)
  2. Pay annual membership fees
  3. In some cases, pass additional professional exams (e.g., the MIR for doctors, Master de Acceso for lawyers)

ANECA’s Role

The Agencia Nacional de Evaluación de la Calidad y Acreditación (ANECA) handles credential evaluation for academic purposes (university teaching, research positions). If you plan to work in Spanish higher education, you need ANECA accreditation in addition to (or instead of) Ministry homologación.

Costs

ItemCost
Application fee (tasa)~€160
Document apostille€15-€75 (varies by country)
Sworn translations (degree + transcript)€150-€300
Complementary exam fees (if required)€50-€200 per exam
Total estimate€350-€750

Tips for a Smooth Process

  • Start before you move. You can apply from outside Spain through the Spanish consulate. Given the 6-18 month timeline, starting early means your credencial is ready when you need it.
  • Get a detailed transcript. The more detail (course descriptions, hours, ECTS credits), the easier it is for the Ministry to match your curriculum. Ask your university for a suplemento al título or detailed academic record.
  • Check for bilateral agreements. Spain has degree recognition agreements with several countries (notably within the EU/Bologna Process, and bilateral treaties with some Latin American countries). These can simplify or speed up the process.
  • Healthcare professionals: The MIR (Médico Interno Residente) exam for doctors, and equivalent exams for other healthcare roles, are separate from homologación. You need homologación first, then pass the professional exam.
  • EU degrees: Degrees from EU/EEA countries benefit from automatic recognition for many regulated professions under EU Directive 2005/36/EC. The process is faster and handled by the relevant Ministry (Health for doctors, Justice for lawyers, etc.), not the Ministry of Education.
